Rock Singer Heir to Slade Estate

Syntagma readers may remember a long-running story we carried last year about English aristocrat Sir Benjamin Slade’s search for an heir to his fabulous country estate in Somerset.

We first put the story out on our sister site, Aristocracy Anecdotes. It made the Today show in the U.S. and we were deluged with hundreds of comments and emails, many assuming I was Sir Ben himself. Since then, the site has received a steady flow of traffic from would-be Slades and country gentlefolk. Sir Benjamin himself received 15,000 applications.

Now we know that he is close to finding his longed-for heir to the Maunsel estate in the unlikely shape of a young American rock singer, Isaac Slade (pictured, right), frontman to the band, Fray.

  1. I believe an earlier “uncompleted” email reply may have been sent. Just thought it would be fun to send a quick note. When we had heard the story last year about Sir Benjamin Slade, my husband; Hartley Slade, discounted the story. Life carried on, then I just read the recent article in a Canadian weekly publication “Macleans”. ….. and was amazed how the picture of Sir Benjamin; resembled my husband and my father in law - both Leonard “Hartley” Slade’s. Again my husband wasn’t interested in trying to make contact. My father’s family, came from Newfoundland, Canada and settled and still live in Nova Scotia, Canada.

I’m glad Sir Benjamin has found an heir …. he looks like a very nice young man.

For interest only, if there is a website I can forward a couple of pictures of the two “Hartley” Slades, could you please let me know.

    Thanks,

  2. Karen, please send the photos of your two “Hartley” Slades to info@sladegenealogy.net
