I’m happy to report our four stricken blogs are now back online.

The server had a primary hard disk failure. The disk had to be replaced and the whole thing reinstalled. However, the engineers managed to scrape the data off the old disk so everything emerged totally up-to-date. Otherwise, in the worst case, we might have dropped a post or comment or two.
The backup facilities proved robust and everything turned out OK, despite the sites being offline for around 12 hours.
These things happen, of course. A server company can’t be responsible for every tiny connection within every piece of equipment, nor for every bug in largely open-source software. So we have to cut them some slack. Personally, I was impressed by the way they handled this event.
I’m not going to identify the company in case I’ve inadvertently given a bad impression of it in the past few days. Syntagma Media will be staying put, but we will be improving our client-side backup facilities … just in case.
